McKeown and Players Discuss the Forthcoming Season in WNUR's 'Fired Up' Event for Women's Basketball

Northwestern University women's basketball coach Joe McKeon sat down with a panel of experts at the Firehouse Grill on Tuesday night to discuss the upcoming season for WNUR's annual "Passionate with Joe McKeon" event.

McKeon was interviewed by Athletic Director Andrew Neville and Bria Rasek. He was joined by senior forward Paige Mott and sophomore guard Caroline Liu.

McKeon, who will be in his 16th season with the Wildcats, said Northwestern is looking ahead and no longer worried about the past disappointing 2022-23 season.

Here are four key points from McKeon's remarks Tuesday:

The Wildcats harbor an obsession
No player on Northwestern's roster was listed on any pre-season Big Ten honor roll. McKeon said the Wildcats are embracing an "underdog mentality."

McKeon said, "Our players really see the way we've been overlooked, and maybe now that's a good thing, maybe that will motivate them. We have a lot to show for it."

Last year, Northwestern finished at the bottom of the Big Ten with a 2-16 record, winning just nine games. McKeon said the Wildcats have changed the way they play and the coaching staff feels "passionate" about the new season.

Liu, who was named team captain this year, said the Westport, Connecticut native, who is the team's top three-point shooter, has a different atmosphere on the team this year.

Liu said, "We have a different mood because of what happened last season, and we're all really looking forward to getting started."
